This week we got to go out and do my family pictures! We did our pictures on Purdue University Campus to celebrate the 4 years that we have lived here. I have a dear friend that is working on developing her photography talent and she was kind enough to offer her service. She was kind enough to take the pictures for us and then she let me edit them. I LOVE THEM! Thanks Heather you are awesome!
(Note: If you are working on your own photography skills and editing please do not ask your photographer if you can edit your own pictures they won't do it and we are just such good friends that this worked out for us.)
Now check out my beautiful family and leave some love in the comments section about my Gerber worthy children!

Heidi Jensen Photography is Moving!
I LOVE INDIANA! I am so grateful that I was able to start my photography business here and meet so many wonderful people and be a small part of their life to capture precious moments. My husband is graduating in August and sadly that means moving away from Indiana. It will be very bittersweet. We are sad to leave this wonderful area. (I remember when we first considered attending Purdue University, we had to pull out a map to see where Indiana was!) But at the same time we are excited for the new adventures awaiting us.
Oh, so you want to know where we are moving to.......we are moving to State College, Pennsylvania! We will live there for one year while my husband does a post-doc at Penn State University and then in August 2014 we will move again to.......Provo, Utah! My husband will start in Fall 2014 as a professor at BYU! I can't even begin to tell you how excited we are for both opportunities!
What does this mean for you?
I will be scheduling sessions in the Lafayette, Indiana area through June 29, 2013. My weekends are filling up fast so please contact me asap to get your session scheduled. I will be able to do a few sessions during the week in the evenings.
My calendar for the State College, Pennsylvania area will open up in September 2013. I will only be taking a limited number of sessions each month while we are living there, so go ahead and schedule your session soon to get on my calendar. My pricing will increase slightly, so please refer to the Investment page for your session cost.

What Should I Wear? Finding Clothing Inspiration for Your Session
Running a small photography business means that I am not just a photographer. I also have to be a designer, marketing person, accountant, sales person, and fashion consultant. I am by no means an expert in all these areas. One day I will be able to outsource some of these things. But one area that I struggle with is fashion.
The hardest question I get from a client is "What should I wear?"
To be honest, I have no idea! Everyone has a different style and I really want you to be yourself in the pictures. I
can tell when something is not going to work, but I am not enough of a
fashionista to say what colors or styles you should try.
With that, I would like to invite you to follow me on pinterest where I will pin clothes that others have put together and work.
With Spring and Summer up on us, pull out those cute clothes and let's do a session!

The M Family ~ Lafayette, Indiana Photographer
Back in February my church had a really fun service auction for the women. We had a real auctioneer there who was speaking so fast, it was awesome! There was so much fun stuff from someone making a very nice dinner for your family to coming and helping you organize your closet to making adorable blankets and hair bows. I gave away a photo session and there are a couple other photographers in our group of women who did too. With some help from others I was able to win a photo session too! Photographers need family pictures too! Up now is the family that won the photo session from me! I love their pictures! (Do I need to add more exclamation marks to show my excitement!) I love their pictures!!!!!!
Sometimes I wish that I could replicate these beautiful pictures but with my family in them.....

I LOVE THIS PICTURE!
We got some with Grandma too!
Perfection...straight out of the camera! Beautiful baby girl!
Little girl A is 1! ~ Lafayette Indiana Photographer
Little A was such a trooper the morning we did these pictures, her parents realized later in the day that she was sick :( As parents, we've all been there. So it was a little difficult to pull the happiness out of this darling little girl; the only thing that would make her smile was their little dog, Peaches! Peaches even sneaked into some of the pictures. Happy 1st birthday to A!

Baby G ~ West Lafayette, Indiana Lifestyle Photographer
I find as I do more sessions, that my style is more of a candid in the moment feel rather then posing everyone and that even happens with babies. I know we all see those adorable posts all over pinterest of those cute babies ALL posed perfectly. I've tried to copy it, but that is not me and I feel comfortable in my candid style. At first this was frustrating for me, but I have come to accept and embrace that I am more of a lifestyle photographer.
Baby G is the first baby that I have done in a while (besides my own) and I was a little nervous. She is 1 week old and wanted to watch everything going on around her. Her mom fed her and rocked her, but she just wanted to keep her eyes wide open! Maybe that has to do with the fact that she has 2 older brothers running around who LOVE her SO MUCH and are super excited to have her as part of their family now. Check out these adorable pictures of this beautiful baby!

Understanding Copyright & Print Releases
(Used with permission from Brooke Sadler, brookesadler.blogspot.com)
You as the artist put so much time and effort into this painting. You love it and you can't wait to see it hanging up in your friend's house. You go visit your friend one day and see this hanging on their wall....
What the heck happened? They cut out most of the painting and even changed the colors a little.
How does that make you feel? Like they ruined your artwork, undervalued, sad, and so many more emotions.
I use a painting/drawing to illustrate this example because in general people would not mess up a painting like that (unless it is their own art piece). Now think of it from a photographers point of view. This is how we feel when we see this beautiful image we have worked so hard on cropped and reedited. Not cool. If you want the picture reedited and cropped differently just talk to the photographer he/she would probably be more than willing to work something out for you! I am writing about this because I see copyright violations happen all the time and I feel sad for the original photographer (I have had it happen and I've seen it happen to lots of other photographers).
I think that I am like most people that when it comes to my family pictures I want digital copies because I want to be able to print as many as I want and post them on facebook or my blog. I hear you saying you want that too. That is why I do this in my business. Every session gets a CD of edited high-resolution images from me. I also give out a print release to my clients. A print release is NOT a copyright release. I own all the copyrights for all my images. When you sign your contract for our session you are acknowledging that you understand that I have full copyright ownership. If you want the copyright release, I do offer that as an additional fee. You may be in the picture and paid me to take the pictures, but the photographer is the original artist.
So what is the difference?
Print releases DO:
- Allow you to get prints where ever you want (some places may require you to provide the written print release from the photographer).
- Make digital scrapbooks (ex. Shutterfly.com)
- Share on social media websites WITH a tag or link saying that the picture was taken by Heidi Jensen Photography.
- Allow you to edit the images - including editing color and cropping
- DO NOT crop out watermarks when sharing or making your profile picture - this is a violation of copyright law
- Claim as your own work
- Sell images
- Copy images - this includes taking screenshots and downloading with a right click
- If it seems dishonest than it probably is not something you should be doing
- Gives you sole ownership over the images and you can edit and sell them
- Original Photographer needs written permission to use pictures in any way
If you would like to read more, Rachel from The Law Tog has a great article on Copyright Laws. I hope
that I have helped educate someone a little more when it comes to print releases and copyrights.
So after all that the basic take home message is that if you don't have copyright ownership of the images DO NOT crop, edit, download or sell images as your own because that is copyright infringement and you can be sued!
Now go spread the word and help stop copyright infringement!
